Should a Catholic Voter always vote for the Prolife Candidate for Public Office?
The answer is yes, his Catholic faith doesn't require him to do so, but to be a good practicing Catholic he should choose the prolife candidate unless that candidate's stand on other issues fails to protect human life. It is well established that the Catholic Church wants its members to do whatever they possibly can to safeguard human life. Pope Fransis has questioned the sincerity of prolife candidates who also favor the death penalty. If a prolife candidate for public office also favors the death penalty he may very well have identified himself as being prolife merely to gain political advantage. A Catholic voter should not vote for that candidate because his work as a prolife representative will be of little value to the prolife cause.
Catholic voters in the United States today see a long line of congressional candidates whose political stand on other issues fails to protect human life.
Here are a few examples

If a prolife congressional representative votes to cut off life saving medical attention to hundreds of American citizens who lack the financial means to obtain that medical attention, that congressional representative has simply chosen to allow those folks to die and a Catholic voter may very well decide not to vote for that candidate. The United States is the only commercially advanced country in the world that does not consider basic medical attention to be a right of citizenship.
2. If a congressional candidate has supported careless enforcement of immigration laws to the extent that the lives of American citizens and the lives of immigrants residing legally in the United States are put at risk, a catholic vote may very well decide not to vote for that candidate.
3.If a congressional candidate has supported killing suspected drug smugglers rather than stopping their boat to find out if they are actually smuggling drugs, a Catholic may very well decide not to vote for that candidate.
4.If a congressional candidate supports the war against Iran which is a war of choice where 18 members of our military services have been killed and thousands of human beings on the ground in Iran have been killed where the United States has employed overwhelming military force to get Iran to agree to not build nuclear weapons, when we were previously told that Iran had already agreed not to build nuclear weapons and where Pope Leo has recently spoken out against the Iran war; a catholic voter may become confused and may very well decide not to vote for that candidate.
Furthermore, abortion legislation is within the purview of the state legislatures and the work of a prolife congressional representative would have little to do with state legislation.
A catholic voter just wants to make a morally sound judgement in selecting his political representatives. A Catholic voter can make a morally sound judgement if he is guided by the words of Pope Fransis, guided by the words of Pope Leo and the dictates of his own conscience.
